Last week I got a call from Joyce!  She informed me that she was a member of the Union County Quilters ladies group.  Believe it or not, this is no fly-by-night quilting group!  This group of ladies does some MEAN and SERIOUS quilting!  When I was invited over to see their work, there were blue ribbons hanging all over the place and GORGEOUS quilts hanging for viewing and ooohing and aaahing over!  These are not the kind of quilts that you throw over your bed and lounge around on!  No sir!  These are not the kind of quilts that you let your cats sleep on and make their biskets on……..no sir!  These are very precious, carefully crafted quilts that take MONTHS to make!  These quilts are masterpieces and are usually displayed by hanging them on the wall or by framing them!  What REALLY makes these quilts special is the fact that they are all made for charity work!  These wonderful ladies put all this hard work, time and love into their quilts JUST to donate them for auction to raise money for charity groups!

FURR was lucky enough to be selected as one of the charity groups to be honored with one of these special quilts!  (see picture attached)  Our quilt will be finished by the end of the year and it is just ADORABLE with red and black kitties on it!  If you can see in the picture, there are button noses and eyes, little collars with bells, all kinds of precious faces, etc.  It is truly one of a kind!  FURR will be holding a raffle for this beautiful kitty quilt starting soon and the raffle will probably run for at least 6 months.  The goal (according to the ladies!) is to raise at least $2,000 to $3,000 for this piece!!!  How great is that?  You can bet that I’m going to buy my share of raffle tickets!  I can clearly see this beautiful display hanging in my NEW kitty rescue facility!

Declawing isn’t a nail trim. It isn’t the equivalent of permanently removing ‘just’ the claws. It is amputation of the entire first joint of each of a cat’s toes.

Declawing is an expensive and irreversible procedure, worst of all, it is very painful for the cat.

Cats have claws for a reason, and declawing creates both physical and emotional problems for many pets.

There are no benefits of declawing… only risks… to the cat, which is why finding alternatives to the surgery is the humane and loving thing to do.

Declawing is surgery that involves amputating the first joint of a cat's toes.

Three Abandoned Cats

On September 26 in the middle of the night, someone abandoned three cats in carriers outside the gate of the FURR Lodge which also happens to be my personal property.  My husband, Mike, had let our dogs out early that morning and could not understand why they would not quit barking at the gate.  Much to his dismay he discovered three cat carriers each containing a terrified cat facing the barking dogs!  The poor little things were hissing, shaking and literally scared to death!

The person who abandoned them left a note saying, “I know you’ll do the right thing.”  Yes, we will do the right thing, but this is not how we want to take in cats.  We were not prepared to take in three new cats and this put a strain on our resources.  People may think that just one more cat doesn’t make a difference to an animal rescue organization.  However, it does and people involved in animal rescue know that limits on the number of animals within a facility are controlled for good reason!  Overcrowding leads to so many problems and it limits our ability to provide them the proper care and attention.

We had no free space at the FURR Lodge so these poor cats had to be boarded at the vet’s office for several days.  They had just spent hours in the middle of the night in a carrier at the end of our driveway, were terrified by barking dogs and were now in cages at an unfamiliar place.  We discovered all three cats were females.  As many of you know, the cost to spay a female is greater than the cost to neuter a male cat.  The vet work for the three female cats cost $600 for 3 spays, 3 combo tests, 3 rabies shots, 3 distemper shots, 3 Adv Multi, 3 de-wormers,  3 Capstars…not counting food, litter & transportation & boarding at the vet’s office.  This is a large financial burden that we were not prepared for and do not have the resources to cover!  Since we have taken in these cats, other cats that we wanted to rescue now have to wait.

An important note for everyone:  Abandoning animals in this manner against the law and is also unethical.  I would like for the person to step forward and admit guilt and also help with the huge financial burden this has created for FURR.  If anyone has any information that could help us identify the person that did this, we would greatly appreciate it.

Huge cat rescue in Monroe – Hoarding Situation

FURR called to help 22 cats in distress.

When Terry Schultz, Founder of FURR, received a frantic call from a crying woman in Monroe, she had no idea what awaited her.  The hysterical woman reported that FURR was the only rescue organization to return her call.

The woman was scheduled to move in the next 48 hours and she was desperate to find a rescue group to take her cats since she could not bear to take them to Animal Control and could not take them with her.  As a last resort, she planned to toss the cats out of the only home they had ever known and leave them to fend for themselves.

Needless to say, time was critical since FURR had less than 48 hours to rescue the cats.

Once on the scene, FURR volunteers found a horrible situation.  Most of the cats were in great distress due to the sad conditions they had been living in.  Since none of the cats were spayed or neutered, the population of cats within this tiny apartment had continued to grow.“Kittens were everywhere and most were emaciated and had runny eyes.  I could tell they had little or no prior socialization,” reported Terry Schultz, president of FURR.  “All needed medical care.”

After assessing the situation, FURR volunteers rolled up their sleeves and started the task of removing the cats one by one which turned out to be quite a challenge.  Many of the adult cats proved to be much less tame than reported by the owner.

Since the FURR Lodge was full, Terry Schultz immediately started contacting potential foster homes, as well as other rescue facilities to assist with relocation of the cats.  Luckily, several FURR volunteers stepped up to the task, as well as two other rescue groups.  Within 48 hours all cats were removed from the premises of the hoarding situation.

“The cats are all receiving emergency medical care,” reported Schultz, right after the huge rescue.  “And the costs of treatment for so many cats will be considerable. “

As is always the case with hoarders, they typically cannot comprehend that they are harming their pets by failing to provide them with proper care.  The owner of these 22 cats could barely afford to feed them and veterinary care was out of the question.  Yet she was extremely attached to them and devastated to give them up.

“I felt so sorry for these cats,” said Schultz.  They deserve a better life than this and once the cats are stabilized, we’ll start the process of finding good new homes for them.  All the cats now have fresh food, water and litter and they’re getting the medical attention they desperately need.”
